🌿 What is the Sea Lily?
Scientifically known as Pancratium maritimum, the name derives from the Greek words “pan” (all) and “kratos” (powerful), symbolizing its remarkable strength despite its fragile appearance. This coastal plant, belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family, is specially adapted to withstand sun, wind, and sandy terrain.

📍 Where Does the Sea Lily Grow?
The Sea Lily is found along the Atlantic coast, from Brittany to Portugal, and throughout the Mediterranean. Thanks to its incredible resilience, its seeds can float on seawater for extended periods without losing their ability to germinate.
In Italy, the Sea Lily thrives within 50 meters from the shoreline, particularly in:

However, due to the risk of extinction, it is a protected species in some regions, including Lazio, Molise, Basilicata, and Calabria, where collecting it is strictly forbidden.
🌼 When Does the Sea Lily Bloom?
The Sea Lily’s flowering season is a true summer spectacle, occurring between July 15th and late August.
As the blooms fade, they leave behind green seed capsules, which gradually ripen under the September sun, turning brown and splitting open to release black seeds. These seeds then settle in the sand, ensuring a new generation of Sea Lilies emerges the following summer.
