DIY Methods to Keep Moles Away

There are various traps available, such as harpoon and scissor traps, which can be placed in their tunnels. However, these methods can injure or kill moles. If you prefer a more humane approach, consider creating a device that simply scares them away.

Building a DIY Trap

To construct a DIY trap that won’t harm moles, you will need some basic materials:

  • 10 cm wide wooden board (at least 2 meters long)
  • Brick
  • 80 cm long tube (with drilled holes)
  • 27 cm and 40 cm long brackets
  • Abrasive disk (for a plate)
  • 35 cm wire
  • 5 steel bars (with electrodes)

Steps to Create the Trap:

  1. Make a 30 cm hole in the wooden board.
  2. Attach a brick and the tube on top.
  3. Drill holes in the brackets to secure the tubes.
  4. Create a plate with an abrasive disk, drilling holes for rope and bolts.
  5. Use metal parts to secure the board to the ground near the mole’s tunnel.
  6. Dig a shallow hole in front of the tunnel and place woodpeckers inside to lure the mole.

How the Trap Works

When the mole attempts to exit its den, it will accidentally touch the disk, causing the wooden bracket and brick to fall, which scares it away. This trap not only helps to drive away moles but also indicates their presence in the area.

Alternative Mole Deterrents

If building a trap isn’t for you, consider these alternative methods:

  • Soak cloths in garlic, onion, naphthalene, gasoline, coffee grounds, or castor oil and place them near the holes. These scents effectively repel moles.
  • Plant Euphorbia catapuzia, known for its strong-smelling milky liquid that deters moles.

Using Metal Nets

For a more permanent solution, install metal nets at least one meter deep throughout your garden. This method is highly effective without the need for chemicals or poison, which can harm the ecosystem and contaminate your garden.
