This technique, known as interspecific grafting, was developed in India to increase productivity while using less soil. It helps farmers:
β Grow multiple vegetables from a single plant
β Improve plant resilience to harsh weather conditions and pests
β Enhance tolerance to stress from animals (biotic) and the environment (abiotic)
The breakthrough comes from a research team at ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, which successfully grew:

π¬ How Does the Grafting Process Work?
The experiment followed a specific grafting method using young seedlings of different plants.
β Age of plants at grafting:
- Eggplant seedlings: 25-30 days old
- Tomato seedlings: 22-25 days old
β Grafting method used: Side/splice grafting
- A 5 to 7 mm oblique cut (45Β° angle) was made on both plants.
- The grafted plants were then placed in controlled conditions for the first 5-7 days with optimal temperature, humidity, and light.
- After that, they were moved to partial shade for another 5-7 days.
- Transplanting into soil took place 15-18 days after grafting.
During growth, any shoots that formed below the grafting point were removed, ensuring proper development.
β³ When Do the Vegetables Start Growing?
π₯ Within 60-70 days, the experiment successfully produced:
β Eggplants from one part of the plant
β Tomatoes from another part
Each vegetable remained distinct and separate, proving that interspecific grafting does not mix the crops into one hybrid but allows for dual-yield cultivation.
