How to Save a Dry Orchid with the Sponge Trick:
1. Prune the Roots:
- Remove the orchid from its pot.
- Use sterilized scissors to cut off any rotten or dry roots.
- Only remove roots that are completely dry or rotten; leave the healthy ones intact.
2. Add a Sponge:
- Take a dish sponge and attach it to the base of the orchid.
- Place the orchid and sponge in a glass filled with one centimeter of water.
- The sponge serves as a habitat for the orchid to develop new roots.
3. Repotting:
- After 2 to 3 weeks, new roots should form.
- Repot the orchid into a suitable pot and potting mix.
- Water moderately to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
- Spray water on the leaves every 3-4 days to maintain high humidity.
Precautions:
- Perform the sponge trick during warm months for higher success.
- Place the orchid in a bright location without direct exposure to the sun’s rays.
Rooting with Peat and Sand:
- An alternative method is rooting in a mix of peat and sand.
- Cut off damaged roots and place the orchid in the peat and sand mix.
- Sphagnum moss can also be used as a substrate for new root formation.
Prevention:
- Water regularly, especially in spring and summer. Test soil dryness before watering.
- Use a transparent vase for better root health.
- Choose a plastic pot that allows sunlight to pass through.
- Place the orchid in a location with plenty of light (not direct) and 60% humidity.
Note: The success of the sponge trick is higher during warm months, and preventive measures help maintain orchid health.
