How to Change Succulents’ Color

Succulents, prized for their beauty and resilience, come in various hues, from green to pink, purple, and red. You may have noticed that these colors can shift throughout the seasons. This color transformation is due to the pigments within the plants, such as chlorophyll (green), carotenoids (orange and yellow), and anthocyanins (pink, purple, red, or blue). While not all succulents change color, many do in response to factors like seasonal variations, watering patterns, light exposure, and fertilizer usage.

This color alteration is a natural response to stress for the plants, but it’s important to note that stress, in this context, isn’t necessarily harmful. Succulents have the remarkable ability to adapt to challenging environmental conditions. When faced with stressors like changing light levels, water availability, soil conditions, or temperature fluctuations, succulents increase pigment production to shield themselves. This heightened pigment production is what leads to their color changes.

Intentionally inducing stress is the key to altering the color of succulents, but it must be done carefully to avoid harming the plants. Gradual changes and regular monitoring of plant health are crucial. There are several methods to stress succulents effectively:

  1. Adjusting Light Exposure: Providing more light, including artificial light for indoor plants, can accelerate pigment activation and color change.
  2. Modifying Watering Frequency: Lengthening the time between waterings can prompt succulents to change color. However, it’s essential to prevent both underwatering and overwatering.
  3. Soil Composition: Altering the soil composition or drainage properties can stress succulents and influence their coloration.
  4. Temperature Variations: Exposing succulents to slight temperature fluctuations can induce stress and trigger color changes.
  5. Fertilizer Avoidance: Withholding fertilizer can serve as a stressor and encourage succulents to change color.

By carefully applying these techniques, you can effectively alter the color of your succulents and enjoy a vibrant and ever-changing display in your garden or indoor space.
