Using bananas to make an orchid bloom again is a common DIY method among gardeners. Here’s how you can do it:
- Prepare the Orchid Branch:
- Choose a branch without flowers or buds from the orchid plant. Trim the ends of the branch until the light green interior is visible.
- Apply Garlic and Seal with Wax:
- Peel a clove of garlic and rub it on both ends of the branch. This helps prevent mold or fungus growth. Then, seal the ends of the branch with melted candle wax to prevent water loss.
- Create Banana Solution:
- Peel a small banana and blend both the fruit and the peels with a liter of water. Strain the mixture to obtain a liquid solution.
- Soak the Branch:
- Completely immerse the prepared orchid branch in the banana solution in an airtight container for at least 20 minutes. This solution serves as an activator for the branch.
- Prepare Cinnamon Disinfectant:
- Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon with a liter of boiling water. Let it cool and then strain the mixture to obtain a disinfectant solution.
- Prepare Moss:
- Soak moss in the cinnamon solution for 20 minutes. Squeeze out excess water and let it dry on a paper towel.
- Create Mini Greenhouse:
- Cut a large water bottle one-third of the way down. Place some pebbles at the bottom for drainage. Add the soaked moss and then lay the orchid branch horizontally on top of it.
- Moisten and Close the Greenhouse:
- Spray the branch and moss with water. Close the bottle to retain moisture inside. Regularly spray water to keep the environment humid.
- Monitor Growth:
- Keep the mini greenhouse in a warm, well-lit area with indirect sunlight. After a few weeks, you should see new shoots emerging from the branch.
- Transplant Seedling:
- After a few months, when the seedling has developed roots, you can transplant it into orchid bark or potting mix for further growth.
By following these steps, you can use bananas to help revive a dying orchid and propagate it successfully at home.
