How to Propagate an Orchid Cactus from Stems

The orchid cactus, also known as “Epicactus,” is a captivating houseplant native to Central America. With its stunning, fragrant, two-colored flowers that bloom at night, it’s a delightful addition to any collection. Propagating this plant from stems is an excellent way to grow new plants. Here are four methods to propagate an orchid cactus from stems:

  1. River Sand:
    • Use a plastic container with drainage holes.
    • Rinse river sand under running water to remove residues.
    • Moisten the sand and place it in the container.
    • Lay the orchid leaf on top, planting the base in the sand for support.
    • Allow the leaf to root in the sand.
  2. Water:
    • Fill a plastic cup with tap water, letting it sit for a day to remove chlorine.
    • Pour two glasses of water into the cup.
    • Place the orchid leaf in the water, ensuring it’s submerged.
    • Spray the leaf with water daily for hydration.
  3. Wet Cotton:
    • Use cotton wool or a paper towel and a water-filled container.
    • Dip the cotton in water, squeeze out excess water.
    • Place the leaf on the wet cotton, fold it in half, and fold the sides inward.
    • Put it in a plastic cup without water, allowing it to stand upright.
  4. Glass:
    • Create a mixture with one-third planting substrate and coconut fibers, one-third river sand, and one-third potting soil pearls.
    • Fill a pot with river sand and add the prepared potting soil mixture.
    • Make a notch in the middle to insert the leaf, covering it halfway.
    • Place the pot on another container for drainage during watering.

General Instructions:

  • Ensure the leaf is positioned for upward growth.
  • Place plants in a well-lit location, avoiding direct sunlight.
  • Water only when the soil, sand, or cotton wool is dry.
  • After approximately two months, new flowers should start to appear.

Following these propagation methods will help you multiply your orchid cactus collection and enjoy the beauty of its flowers. Happy planting!
