As spring approaches, many Ukrainians embark on the journey of growing seedlings. Yet, even in the selection of containers for seedlings, challenges may arise.

However, there’s no need to invest in specialized containers when there exists a budget-friendly and eco-conscious alternative: eggshells.

How to Grow Seedlings in Eggshells:

The choice to grow seedlings in eggshells stems from the rich composition of calcium, nitrogen, and phosphoric acid found in them – essential elements for the protection and growth of plants in their early stages.

  1. Preparation: Boil the eggshells and ensure they are thoroughly dried to create optimal conditions for seed germination.
  2. Sowing: After boiling and drying, seeds can be sown in the eggshells. Make a hole at the bottom of each half to prevent water stagnation, which aids in successful germination. Plant a couple of seeds in each half.
  3. Placement: Eggshells can be conveniently placed in an egg tray, providing optimal conditions for seedling growth.

The use of eggshells offers a unique advantage not only due to their nutrient-rich composition but also their practicality. Placing the eggshell halves in an egg tray creates an ideal environment for seedling cultivation.

This method is particularly effective for fast-growing crops with a short span between sowing and transplanting into the soil, typically up to 20 days. Moreover, seedlings can be transplanted directly into the soil with the eggshell intact, after crushing it lightly.

By employing this simple and cost-effective method, seasoned gardeners can achieve remarkable success in seedling cultivation.
