Bari has officially welcomed the first tulip park in Puglia, a stunning 24,000-square-meter field filled with 120,000 tulips from 78 different varieties. Located near San Nicola Stadium, this Dutch-inspired attraction even features a classic windmill for an authentic touch.
The Tulipark opened its doors on March 27, 2024, and it’s already a hit—over 1,500 tickets were sold for opening day alone! Visitors can wander through colorful tulip fields, take photos, and even pick flowers to take home. However, while this may sound like a dream come true, there’s an important question to consider:

🌱 Is it really a good idea to cut tulips?
🌷 Why Cutting Tulips Can Be Harmful
While the idea of picking tulips may be tempting, cutting them can actually harm the plant’s ability to bloom again. Like other bulbous plants, tulips store energy in their bulbs, which they use to grow and flower in the following seasons. When tulips are cut too soon, they lose part of their energy reserves, affecting their future growth and reducing their chance of reblooming.
🚫 The Risks of Cutting Tulips:
✔ Energy loss: The plant can’t store enough nutrients for next year’s bloom.
✔ Shorter lifespan: Tulips absorb water and nutrients even after being cut, but early harvesting reduces their longevity.
✔ Weakened bulbs: Without their leaves and stems, bulbs may not develop properly.
🌿 How to Pick Tulips Without Damaging Them
If you still want to bring tulips home, there are ways to minimize damage and keep them fresh longer:
✂ Use sharp scissors to make a clean, angled cut—this increases the flower’s ability to absorb water.
🌱 Leave the bulb intact in the ground instead of pulling out the entire plant.
🌼 Harvest tulips in bud stage (before they fully open) to extend their vase life.
🌸 Enjoying Tulips the Right Way
To truly appreciate their beauty, the best way to enjoy tulips is to let them remain in the ground until the season ends. If necessary, bulbs can be removed for storage or crop rotation, but leaving them undisturbed ensures stronger, healthier blooms in the following years.
So, while Bari’s Tulipark offers a wonderful chance to experience a breathtaking sea of flowers, perhaps the best way to honor their beauty is to let them stay rooted in the soil, where they belong. 🌷💚
